Renibacterium salmoninarum (bacterial kidney disease - BKD)
also known as: BKD, White Boil Disease, Dee Disease, Salmonid Kidney Disease, Corynebacterial Kidney Disease, Renibacterium
BKD is named after the off-white lesions caused in the kidney by the bacterium Renibacterium salmoninarum. The disease usually progresses to a systemic infection, affecting many organs, and killing the host. BKD outbreaks have impacted many salmon and trout populations. BKD can be transmitted via infected eggs and fish during spawning. |
