Salvelinema are parasitic roundworms, seen commonly in juvenile salmonids as they are leaving freshwater. Salvelinema walkeri grow in the swim bladder of the fish host, and several hundred worms can develop in a single fish. The effects of the parasite on the host are unknown, but possibly impedes the fish's buoyancy. |
